The Program Philosophy

What We Stand For

The Hewlett band program is built on the belief that music is not a subject — it is a discipline. That rehearsal is not a class — it is a community. That the skills students develop here do not stay in the band room — they travel with them into every challenge they will ever face.

From a 3rd grader discovering the sound of their first note to a senior performing on the Wind Ensemble stage, the experience is the same at its core: you are part of something that demands your best, celebrates your growth, and will be with you long after graduation.

Purpose
Every rehearsal has a reason.
Every note has a direction.
Pride
In the program. In the tradition.
In each other.
Passion
For the music. For the craft.
For the pursuit of excellence.

The best six-minute argument for music education ever made

Dr. Jack Stamp speaks to a live band and demonstrates in real time what music demands that almost nothing else does. When the band plays at 90–95% — a grade that earns an A in virtually every other subject — you hear immediately why that is not good enough.

"Music demands perfection. It is one of the few things in their lives that demands they be perfect."
